Memorial Day

First, to all, have a nice holiday weekend, but take a few moments to reflect upon why we have this holiday.

Now to my entry for today. I think that I know what Memorial Day is about, it isn't "happy," nor is it sad. We have the time to reflect about our fallen soldiers, about those who left our doorsteps to follow the orders of their Commander in Chief. I am not blasting the current one, but thinking outloud about all of the ones that have asked young men for their help in defending some ideal, on many a foreign shore. I believe in defending our country, our ideas, or way of life. I believe that we have armed forces for a reason, and that when you are enlisted, you are to follow the orders of your Commander in Chief, whethere or not you "believe" that it is right or wrong. That is what brings us to a day to honor those who did that and lost the most precious thing that we all have: LIFE.

I know that to some this is the way to start the summer, the reason to have a BBQ, or a huge all our weekend of drinking and dancing and going in to work on Tuesday with a hangover. I am not saying that it isn't ok to enjoy the extra day off, but please remember that someone, somewhere in this country, from some war, be it Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, WWII, WWI, the WAR OF 1812, Dessert Storm, The Civil War, The Revolutionary War, or any big or little battle that we undertook as a country, lost someone there, a Fellow American, who was drafted, or believed enough in the country to defend principles that may or may not have pertained to him or now, her. There were families grieving since the beginning of this country, and to honor those lost, we have Memorial day.

If your Dad, or your brother or cousin or neighbor went off to war and came home, they understand what I mean. My Dad came home from WWII, my sister's husband came home from VIetnam, they are honored on Vetran's Day.

So that is all for now, enjoy the weekend, we will be out on the baseball field for most of it, our weather will be in the high 80's it looks a little overcast, but they aren't predicting rain. I know that on Monday, I will be taking a little timeout to reflect upon the things that are my rights and freedoms, things that I take for granted, things that others have died fighting for. I will remember that there are people who have lost, for my sake and the sake of everyone living here in this wonderful place we call home.

Yes, we must pause and remember. We always have a meaningful ceremony in the cemetery honoring our fallen soldiers put on by the VFW. To get there we will go by the courthouse whose huge lawn will be lined with rows and rows of American flags. We will visit loved ones graves. A refreshing day it will be.

There will be lots of events to remember them all over the country this weekend and Memorial Day. They certainly deserve it, and every day of the year!
