I am an avid collector, of cookbooks. I have even disposed of a few, because, I didn't use them, or they were too dusty or irrelevent to what I was "into." The strange thing is that I really enjoy going to yard sales and tag sales to look for old cookbooks. I have a CUTCO cookbook, that I think was published in the 50's. When we visited my sister in OLEAN, NY we went to the CUTCO factory and they had an historic display of stuff the company used to sell and offer in promotions. Guess what? The cookbook was there! I thought that was pretty neat, of course, my other sister and brother in law and my husband looked at me in a strange way. I guess my point here is that I collect, not really use cookbooks. I experiment a lot, and when I hit on something, I use it often, or until someone gets tired of it in the house. I have two favorites that I love to read, one is THE NEW YORK COOKBOOK, a large paperback. It gives you a lot of stories and recipies from average folks, famous chefs, and even famous resturaunts. Everything from soup to nuts literally. The author is MOLLY O'NEILL. Check it out if you see it, it is worth the buy. The second, another big paperback, is U.S.A. COOKBOOK bySHEILA LUKINS. This one travels around the country compiling recipies from regular folk, county fairs, the Amish, and everything in between. Again, worth the buy! I have had these books for a few years and enjoy pouring through them for ideas.
Just today's thoughts, because last night, was looking for an easy lentil soup recipie...............anoyne got one???????? There I didn it, I asked for help!

I have oodles of cookbooks too. I had some picked out to give to Goodwill and my nephew's wife saw them and snatched them up. She said to never give a cookbook away! She loves to cook and has a huge cookbook collection. So if I want to get rid of one I ask her if she wants it. So far she has taken them all!
Hi Miki,
I don't have tons of cookbooks but I would love to. I think this is a cool collection to have! I'm here to say "hi" from seeing your comment on Rachel's blog.
I read your profile and I didn't laugh. My husband and I love to dance although it's usually of a different type than that movie, as if we could even compare to JT! lol
My Mom collected cookbooks, too. When she passed away in 2000, she had over 800 cook books, pamphlets and such in her library. Mostly from yard sales. They are still sitting in her house. We don't know if one sister is going to take them or if we are going to sell them on E-Bay or what. As is, they are sitting and rotting. We better do something quick.
She ate very little, she just liked to read them. I use the Internet for recipes. :)
My sister undertook to put a Morrow Family Cookbook together. It took her quite a while but she finally got all of our favorite recipes. She included short stories written by different family members about family gatherings of days gone by.
I like to use the internet for recipes also. A lentil soup does not compute here on the farm.
Hi Miki...wanted to pay a return visit and say hello. My mom actually published a cookbook, and I'm going to try and get it back in print because everybody loved it. I'll send you one if I ever get it done!
Back again. I ate lentil soup regularly as a child. I'm looking for good recipies for you because I think these were not written down! Please feel free to remind me in email because my good intentions list can become long and I also forget and dont' want to! (I tend to file the email and star it.) My email addy is on my profile.
Lentil Soup: Saute all the usual suspects: onions, garlic, celery, etc. Add lentils & broth enough to cover lentils, simmer with carrots (grated), bayleaf, any seasonings you favor, until soft. You can serve over rice to make a whole protein dish or by itself. This is a great diet recipe, since you won't be hungry for hours! If you add tomatoes, as with all beans, don't put them, or any other acid, in until the beans are soft, since they will toughen the beans if added earlier.
(You already knew this... But isn't it fun to mentally taste all those different recipes!)
